Ottawa, ON – The Government of Canada today announced the designation of Country Island, Isle Haute, and St. Paul Island in Nova Scotia as National Wildlife Areas (NWAs). These three islands are located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and are home to a variety of important wildlife species, including seabirds, waterfowl, and marine mammals.
“These three islands are incredible examples of Canada’s natural heritage, and their designation as National Wildlife Areas will help to protect them for future generations,” said the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “These designations are a testament to the hard work of our partners and the local communities who have been working to protect these important ecosystems.”
Country Island is a 90-hectare island located in the Northumberland Strait. The island is home to a large colony of common terns, as well as other seabirds such as black guillemots, razorbills, and Atlantic puffins. Isle Haute is a 120-hectare island located in the Bras d’Or Lake. The island is home to a variety of waterfowl, including black ducks, mallards, and Canada geese. St. Paul Island is a 200-hectare island located in the Cabot Strait.
The designation of these three islands as NWAs will help to protect their important wildlife habitat and the species that depend on it. The NWAs will also provide opportunities for research, education, and recreation.
“The designation of these three islands as National Wildlife Areas is a significant step forward in protecting Canada’s natural heritage,” said Dan Kraus, Executive Director of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. “These islands are home to a variety of important wildlife species, and their protection will help to ensure their survival for future generations.”
The Government of Canada is committed to protecting Canada’s natural heritage. The designation of these three islands as NWAs is part of the government’s commitment to conserving 25% of Canada’s lands and oceans by 2025.
