Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan Invest in Crop Research
Regina, Saskatchewan, January 15, 2025 – The Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan announced a significant investment in crop research today. This investment will support the development of new crop varieties that are more resistant to pests and diseases and better adapted to changing climate conditions.
“This investment is an important step towards ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Canadian agriculture sector,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “By investing in crop research, we are investing in the future of our farmers and ranchers, and in the future of our food supply.”
“Crop research is essential to the success of our agriculture industry in Saskatchewan,” said the Honourable David Marit, Minister of Agriculture for Saskatchewan. “This investment will help our farmers and ranchers adopt new and innovative technologies that will improve their productivity and profitability.”
The investment will be used to support a variety of crop research projects, including:
- Developing new crop varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases
- Improving the yield and quality of crops
- Developing crops that are better adapted to changing climate conditions
- Developing new uses for crops
The projects will be led by a team of researchers from the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Alberta, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
“This investment will allow us to accelerate our research on crop development and help us to find solutions to the challenges facing our farmers,” said Dr. Gordon Ball, a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan.
The investment will also support the training of the next generation of crop researchers. The researchers will be able to work with leading scientists in the field and gain valuable experience in crop research techniques.
“This investment is not only an investment in crop research, but also an investment in the future of Canadian agriculture,” said Bibeau. “By supporting the training of the next generation of crop researchers, we are ensuring that the Canadian agriculture sector will continue to be a leader in innovation.”
The investment is expected to create jobs and boost the economy in Saskatchewan and across Canada. The projects will also help to reduce the environmental impact of crop production and contribute to the overall sustainability of the Canadian agriculture sector.
