Helicopter Removes Artifact from NASA Armstrong Rooftop

Kennedy Space Center, Fla. (Jan. 9, 2025) – A CH-53K King Stallion helicopter from the U.S. Marine Corps removed an artifact from the roof of the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, on Jan. 8, 2025.

The artifact, a full-scale model of the Apollo 11 lunar module, was removed to make way for the installation of a new solar array system on the roof of the building. The model had been on display at Armstrong since 1971.

The helicopter lifted the artifact off the roof and transported it to a nearby storage facility. The operation took approximately two hours to complete.

“This was a complex operation that required a great deal of planning and coordination,” said Tom Welsh, Armstrong’s director. “We are grateful to the U.S. Marine Corps for their assistance in safely removing this artifact.”

The new solar array system will provide Armstrong with renewable energy and reduce the center’s reliance on fossil fuels. The system is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
