Ottawa, January 7, 2025 – The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, will travel to Brussels, Belgium, on January 20th, 2025, to attend the 25th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG).
The UDCG is a group of over 50 countries that have come together to support Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion. The group provides Ukraine with military assistance, financial aid, and other support.
Minister Anand will meet with her counterparts from other UDCG member countries to discuss the latest situation in Ukraine and to coordinate efforts to support Ukraine’s defense.
“Canada remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine,” said Minister Anand. “We will continue to provide Ukraine with the military and financial assistance it needs to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Canada has been a leading member of the UDCG since its inception in April 2022. Canada has provided Ukraine with over $1 billion in military assistance, including armored vehicles, artillery, and ammunition. Canada has also provided Ukraine with over $500 million in financial assistance.
The 25th UDCG meeting comes at a critical time in the conflict in Ukraine. Russia has been intensifying its attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, and the fighting has been particularly heavy in the eastern part of the country.
