New MHRA Chair Anthony Harnden outlines priorities as he starts role

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced the appointment of its new Chair, Anthony Harnden.
Professor Harnden, a leading public health expert and former Deputy Chief Medical Officer, will lead the MHRA’s work to regulate medicines and medical devices, and protect the health of the public.
He said: “I am delighted to be joining the MHRA as Chair. The agency plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medicines and medical devices, and I am committed to working with the team to continue to deliver on this important mission.
“The MHRA has a proud history of protecting the public and I am confident that, under Professor Harnden’s leadership, it will continue to do so in the years to come.”
Professor Harnden brings a wealth of experience to the role. He was Deputy Chief Medical Officer from 2013 to 2019, and has held a number of senior positions in public health, including Director of Public Health for Oxfordshire and Director of Public Health for South Central England.
He is also a Professor of Primary Care at the University of Oxford and a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
Professor Harnden will start his new role on 1 January 2025.
