Federal government announces transfer of more than $100 billion to provinces and territories
Ottawa, ON – 2024-12-24 – The federal government announced today it is transferring $100.8 billion to provinces and territories. The funds will be provided through the Canada Social Transfer (CST) and the Canada Health Transfer (CHT), which are core funding arrangements that support provincial and territorial programs in health, education, social services, and early childhood development.
“Our government is committed to ensuring that Canadians have access to the high-quality public services they rely on,” said the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. “This transfer of funds will help provinces and territories continue to provide essential services to their residents, such as healthcare, education, and childcare.”
The 2024–25 CST is based on the provinces’ and territories’ population estimates as of June 30, 2022. The 2024–25 CHT is based on the provinces’ and territories’ population estimates as of June 30, 2021, and includes a 3% escalator.
The CST provides provinces and territories with funding to support social programs such as income assistance, employment training, early childhood education and care, and housing. The CHT provides provinces and territories with funding to support health care services such as hospitals, doctors, and prescription drugs.
The federal government is also providing provinces and territories with an additional $2.5 billion through the Canada Health Transfer to support their efforts to reduce surgical wait times and improve access to mental health services.
“These funds will help provinces and territories improve the delivery of health care services to Canadians,” said the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health. “We are committed to working with provinces and territories to ensure that all Canadians have access to the high-quality health care they need.”
The federal government is also providing provinces and territories with $1 billion through the Canada Social Transfer to support their efforts to address the rising cost of living.
“We know that many Canadians are struggling to make ends meet,” said the Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. “This funding will help provinces and territories provide support to families and individuals who need it most.”
The transfer of funds to provinces and territories is part of the federal government’s commitment to supporting a strong social safety net for all Canadians. The government is committed to working with provinces and territories to ensure that all Canadians have access to the essential services they rely on.
