NFB and FICFA 2024: 50 Years of Film Production in Acadie
October 31, 2024
Montreal, Quebec – The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) joins the Festival International du cinéma francophone en Acadie (FICFA) for its 40th anniversary in Moncton, New Brunswick, from November 14 to 20, 2024. The NFB will screen seven works during the festival, including the opening film Trécarré (Natalie Robichaud, 2023) on November 14 and the presentation of Kim O’Bomsawin’s Nanin Auassat: We the Children (2023) in the official competition.
“FICFA has showcased the vitality and diversity of Acadian cinema for four decades,” said Claude Joli-Coeur, Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the NFB. “We are proud to participate in this celebration by presenting a selection of our works that reflect the strength of Acadian voices.”
The NFB’s presence at FICFA will highlight its exceptional commitment to Acadie and its filmmakers, who have been telling compelling stories of their communities since the early 1960s. The screening of Trécarré and Nanin Auassat: We the Children is a testament to the NFB’s ongoing relationship with female filmmakers in Acadie.
Trécarré, Natalie Robichaud’s second feature film, is a captivating and intimate portrait of four Franco-Acadian women from different generations and walks of life. The film follows their attempts to break free from the prejudices and constraints that society imposes upon them.
“I am thrilled and honored that Trécarré will open FICFA this year,” said Natalie Robichaud. “The film explores themes of identity, freedom, and resilience that resonate deeply with the Acadian community.”
Kim O’Bomsawin’s Nanin Auassat: We the Children is a powerful and moving documentary that delves into the devastating legacy of Canada’s residential school system for Indigenous children. The film is a testament to the strength and resilience of survivors and an indictment of the systemic racism that continues to plague Indigenous communities in Canada.
“I am honored that Nanin Auassat: We the Children will be screened at FICFA,” said O’Bomsawin. “The film is a reminder of the importance of confronting and addressing the historical trauma inflicted upon Indigenous peoples in Canada.”
The NFB will also present the Prix du court métrage documentaire Roger-Cyr (the Roger-Cyr Short Documentary Award) at FICFA. The award recognizes the excellence of emerging Acadian documentary filmmakers and will be presented to a filmmaker on November 16 at 3 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton.
