Press release – Human rights breaches in Crimea, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan

19 Dec 2024

The international community must take urgent action to address human rights breaches in Crimea, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan, Amnesty International said today.

In Crimea, the Russian authorities continue to suppress dissent and persecute Crimean Tatars. Dozens of Crimean Tatars have been imprisoned on politically motivated charges, and the authorities have banned the Mejlis, the Crimean Tatar self-governing body.

In Kyrgyzstan, the government has cracked down on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. In recent months, dozens of activists have been arrested and charged with extremism. The authorities have also blocked access to several independent media outlets.

In Azerbaijan, the government has imprisoned dozens of opposition activists, journalists and human rights defenders. The authorities have also cracked down on freedom of religion, and several religious minorities have been harassed and persecuted.

“The international community must not turn a blind eye to these human rights breaches,” said John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International’s Europe Director. “Governments must hold the authorities in Crimea, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan to account and demand that they respect human rights.”

Amnesty International is calling on the international community to:

  • Condemn the human rights breaches in Crimea, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan.
  • Demand that the authorities in these countries release all political prisoners.
  • Call for an end to the crackdown on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
  • Support independent human rights organizations in these countries.

Background

  • In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine.
  • Kyrgyzstan is a former Soviet republic in Central Asia.
  • Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic in the Caucasus region.
