Major milestone reached in Correctional Service of Canada’s Health Centre of Excellence
19 December 2024 OTTAWA, ON – Today, the Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and the Honourable Marco Mendicino, Minister of Public Safety, along with Correctional Service Canada (CSC) Commissioner Anne Kelly, marked a significant milestone in the construction of CSC’s new Health Centre of Excellence (HCoE) by announcing the completion of the facility’s concrete structure.
Once completed, the HCoE will be a state-of-the-art mental health facility providing specialized care to federal inmates with serious mental health needs. The 158-bed facility will offer a range of services, including intensive treatment, specialized programming, and rehabilitation, to help inmates stabilize and prepare for their eventual release back into the community.
“The construction of the Health Centre of Excellence is a testament to our government’s commitment to improving the mental health care of federal inmates,” said Minister Lametti. “This new facility will provide inmates with the care and support they need to recover and reintegrate into society.”
“The Health Centre of Excellence will be a vital resource for inmates, staff, and the community,” said Minister Mendicino. “It will help us provide better care for inmates with serious mental health issues, while also enhancing public safety.”
The HCoE is being built on the site of the former Regional Treatment Centre in Kingston, Ontario. The new facility is expected to open in 2025.
“The Health Centre of Excellence will be a transformational project for CSC,” said Commissioner Kelly. “It will significantly enhance our ability to provide inmates with the mental health care they need to succeed in the community.”
The construction of the HCoE is part of CSC’s commitment to provide safe and humane conditions of confinement for federal inmates. The new facility will help CSC meet its obligations under the Corrections and Conditional Release Act to provide inmates with access to appropriate health care services.
