Seizure of contraband and unauthorized items at Drumheller Institution – medium security unit
DRUMHELLER, Alberta – On December 15, 2024, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff members at Drumheller Institution, a medium security federal institution, intercepted and seized a package containing contraband and unauthorized items intended for an inmate.
The package contained the following items:
- 50 grams of cannabis
- 50 grams of shatter (cannabis concentrate)
- 50 grams of methamphetamine
- 100 pills of Xanax
- 2 cell phones
- 1 SIM card
- 1 USB drive
The CSC staff members immediately contacted the Drumheller RCMP and the institution’s Intelligence Unit. The RCMP assumed custody of the seized items and are continuing the investigation.
“The seizure of illegal drugs and unauthorized items is a serious matter which CSC takes very seriously,” said CSC’s Regional Deputy Commissioner for the Prairies, Marie-Claude Gagnon. “CSC has a zero tolerance policy for drugs and other contraband in its institutions. We will continue to work diligently to prevent the flow of contraband into our institutions, and to hold those responsible accountable.”
CSC uses a variety of tools to prevent the introduction of contraband into its institutions, including ion scanners, drug detector dogs, and intelligence sharing. CSC also works closely with law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute those who attempt to smuggle contraband into institutions.
CSC is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for its staff and inmates. The Department will continue to take all necessary measures to prevent the entry of contraband into its institutions, and to hold those responsible accountable.
