New Chair appointed to lead Senior Salaries Review Body

The Prime Minister has appointed Philippa, Baroness Wallis of Eton, as the new Chair of the Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB).

The SSRB is an independent body that makes recommendations to the Prime Minister on the pay and benefits of senior public sector employees, including ministers, MPs, judges, senior civil servants and senior military officers.

Baroness Wallis will take up her post on 1 November 2024, succeeding Sir Michael Barber who has been Chair of the SSRB since 2016.

Baroness Wallis has a wealth of experience in the public and private sectors. She was a member of the House of Lords from 2011 to 2023, where she served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Communities from 2014 to 2015. She was also a member of the House of Commons from 1997 to 2010, where she served as Shadow Minister for Health from 2002 to 2003.

Baroness Wallis is currently a non-executive director of the NHS Confederation and a member of the Advisory Board of the King’s Fund. She is also a visiting professor at the University of Oxford.

The Prime Minister said:

“I am delighted to appoint Baroness Wallis as the new Chair of the Senior Salaries Review Body. She brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, and I am confident that she will lead the SSRB with distinction.”

Baroness Wallis said:

“I am honoured to have been appointed as the new Chair of the Senior Salaries Review Body. I look forward to working with the SSRB to make recommendations on the pay and benefits of senior public sector employees that are fair and sustainable.”
