Ottawa, December 15, 2024 – Today, the Honourable Anita Anandasangaree, Minister of Indigenous Services; the Honourable Daniel Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs; the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health; and the Honourable Kamalpreet Virani, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, issued the following statement on the ninth anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Final Report:
“Today, we mark the ninth anniversary of the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report. This historic report documented the horrors of the residential school system and its lasting impact on Indigenous communities across Canada.
The TRC’s 94 Calls to Action provide a roadmap for reconciliation and healing. Over the past nine years, significant progress has been made on implementing these Calls to Action, including investments in Indigenous education, health, and housing.
However, there is still much more work to be done. We remain committed to working with Indigenous partners to implement the TRC’s Calls to Action and build a better future for all Canadians.
As we reflect on the past and look to the future, let us all recommit to the principles of truth, reconciliation, and respect. Together, we can create a more just and equitable society for all.”
Background:
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established in 2008 to investigate the history and legacy of the Indian Residential School System. The Commission’s Final Report, released on December 15, 2015, contained 94 Calls to Action for reconciliation and healing.
