Uprooted Syrians Mulling Return Mustn’t Be Pushed, Says UNHCR
December 10, 2024
Geneva — Uprooted Syrians should not be pressured into returning home, but should be allowed to make informed choices based on the latest information about the conditions on the ground, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said Friday.
“We understand that many Syrian refugees are eager to return home, but it is important that they are able to do so in safety and dignity,” said Gillian Triggs, UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection.
“We are asking all parties to the conflict to respect the right of Syrians to return voluntarily, in safety and dignity, and without fear of persecution or discrimination,” she added.
UNHCR’s call comes as more than 5.6 million Syrians remain displaced outside the country, and another 6.9 million are internally displaced within Syria.
The agency said that while there have been some improvements in the security situation in some parts of Syria, the overall situation remains volatile and unpredictable.
“There are still serious protection concerns in many areas of Syria, including arbitrary arrest, detention, torture, and sexual violence,” Triggs said.
“We are also concerned about the lack of access to basic services, such as healthcare, education, and water, in many parts of the country,” she added.
UNHCR said that it is working closely with partners to provide assistance and protection to Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons, and to support their eventual return home.
“We are also working to ensure that Syrians who do return have access to the services and support they need to rebuild their lives,” Triggs said.
In the meantime, UNHCR said it is important that Syrian refugees continue to receive protection and assistance in the countries where they are currently living.
“We are grateful to the governments and communities that have welcomed Syrian refugees, and we urge them to continue to provide them with the support they need,” Triggs said.
