Students Aim High at NASA JPL ‘Candy Toss’ Competition
Pasadena, Calif. – On December 6, 2024, more than 200 middle and high school students from across Southern California participated in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) “Candy Toss” competition. The event, now in its 15th year, challenges students to design and build air-powered launchers that can propel candy as far as possible.
This year’s competition took place at JPL’s von Kármán Auditorium, where students presented their launchers to a panel of judges. The judges evaluated the launchers based on their design, construction, and performance. The top three finishers in each division (middle school and high school) received awards and recognition.
The winning launcher in the middle school division was designed and built by a team of seventh-graders from the Polytechnic School in Pasadena. Their launcher, named “Candy Crusher,” propelled a piece of candy over 100 feet.
The winning launcher in the high school division was designed and built by a team of ninth-graders from the Claremont High School. Their launcher, named “The Big Bang,” propelled a piece of candy over 150 feet.
“We are very proud of the students who participated in this year’s competition,” said Candy Toss organizer and JPL engineer Bobby Braun. “They showed great creativity and ingenuity in designing and building their launchers. We hope that this experience will inspire them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.”
The Candy Toss competition is one of many educational outreach programs offered by JPL. These programs aim to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields and to help them develop the skills they need to succeed in the 21st-century workforce.
