NEW YORK — Right-hander David Holmes is finalizing a one-year deal with the Mets that will see him transition to the starting rotation next season, a source told MLB.com on Thursday.
The deal is pending a physical and could be announced as soon as Friday, according to the source.
Holmes, 32, has spent the past six seasons as a reliever for the Pirates, Nationals and A’s. He owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 339 career appearances out of the bullpen.
But Holmes has also logged 108 career innings as a starter, posting a 4.33 ERA and 9.7 strikeouts per nine in that role. Last season, he started three games for the A’s before pitching exclusively in relief during the second half.
