Statement by Minister Marci Ien on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
OTTAWA, ON, Dec. 6, 2024 /CNW/ – Today, the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, issued the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:
“Today, on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the 14 young women who were murdered at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal 36 years ago. We also acknowledge and mourn the countless other women and girls who have lost their lives to violence in Canada and around the world.
Violence against women and girls is a persistent and devastating issue that affects all of us. It is a violation of human rights and a barrier to women’s and girls’ full and equal participation in society.
This day is a time for reflection and action. We must all work together to end violence against women and girls. We must build a society where everyone is safe, respected, and empowered.
The Government of Canada is committed to taking action to prevent and address violence against women and girls. We are investing in prevention programs, supporting survivors, and working to change the attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate violence.
We are also working with provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous communities, and other partners to develop and implement comprehensive strategies to address violence against women and girls.
Today, I urge all Canadians to take action to end violence against women and girls. We can all play a role in creating a more just and equitable society for all.
We can start by educating ourselves about the issue, challenging harmful stereotypes, and supporting organizations that work to end violence against women and girls.
We can also speak out against violence when we see it, and support survivors by believing them and offering our help.
Together, we can create a future where all women and girls are safe from violence.”
