Muslim leaders and UKHSA urge communities to get winter vaccines
Published: 2024-12-06 10:28
Muslim leaders and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) are urging communities to get their winter vaccines amid fears of a surge in flu and Covid cases.
The call comes as the UKHSA reports that flu cases are already circulating in the UK and that there is a risk of a twindemic
of flu and COVID-19 this winter.
Dr Vanessa Saliba, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA said: “We are urging everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 as soon as possible. These vaccines are the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from these viruses.”
“Flu can be a serious illness, and it can lead to hospitalisation and even death. COVID-19 can also be a serious illness, and while the vaccines are not perfect, they can help to reduce your risk of severe illness, hospitalisation and death.”
Imam Qari Asim, Chair of the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB), said: “We fully support the UKHSA’s call for everyone to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19. These vaccines are safe and effective, and they are the best way to protect ourselves and our communities from these viruses.”
“I urge everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated as soon as possible. It is the right thing to do for yourself, your loved ones, and your community.”
The flu vaccine is free for everyone over the age of 50, pregnant women, people with certain medical conditions, and healthcare workers. The COVID-19 vaccine is free for everyone over the age of 12.
You can book a flu vaccine appointment online or by calling your GP surgery. You can also book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment online or by calling 119.
