Ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December, the Prime Minister has announced ambitious plans to end new cases of HIV within England by 2030.
Speaking at a Downing Street reception for people living with HIV, healthcare professionals and HIV charities, the Prime Minister said:
“Today, on the eve of World AIDS Day, I am determined this generation will be the one that ends new cases of HIV within England by 2030.
“We have made huge progress in the fight against HIV, but there is still more to do. We must continue to work together to ensure that everyone with HIV has access to the treatment and support they need, and that we end the stigma and discrimination that still exists around the condition.”
The Prime Minister’s announcement is part of a wider government strategy to tackle HIV. The strategy includes a number of measures to:
- Increase testing and diagnosis rates
- Improve access to treatment and support
- Reduce stigma and discrimination
The government is also working with partners across the world to tackle HIV globally.
The Prime Minister’s announcement has been welcomed by HIV charities and organisations.
Deborah Gold, Chief Executive of the National AIDS Trust, said:
“This is a bold and ambitious target, but it is one that we believe can be achieved. We have the tools and the knowledge to end HIV transmission, and we must now work together to make it happen.”
Ian Green, Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust, said:
“This is a historic moment in the fight against HIV. The Prime Minister’s announcement sends a clear message that the government is committed to ending HIV transmission in England. We will work with the government and our partners to make sure that this happens.”
World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS, and to show support for people living with the condition.
