NASA AI, Open Science Advance Disaster Research and Recovery

NASA is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and open science to accelerate disaster research and improve recovery efforts. Through a new initiative called the Disaster Research and Recovery Program (DRRP), NASA will bring together scientists, engineers, and disaster management experts to develop cutting-edge technologies and data-driven solutions for a wide range of natural and human-caused disasters.
“Disasters are becoming more frequent and more severe due to climate change and other factors,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “NASA’s unique capabilities in Earth observation, AI, and open science make us uniquely qualified to contribute to the global effort to reduce disaster risk and improve recovery outcomes.”
The DRRP will focus on three key areas:
- Disaster Risk Assessment: Using satellite data, AI algorithms, and other advanced technologies, NASA will develop tools to assess disaster risk and identify vulnerable communities.
- Disaster Response: NASA will leverage its space-based assets and AI capabilities to provide near-real-time information to disaster responders, such as satellite imagery of affected areas and data on weather patterns and flood risks.
- Disaster Recovery: NASA will work with partners to develop innovative solutions for post-disaster recovery, such as using 3D printing to build temporary shelters and using satellite data to monitor infrastructure damage and plan reconstruction efforts.
The DRRP will be open to all researchers, regardless of their affiliation or country of origin. NASA will provide funding, data, and technical support to researchers who are working on innovative disaster research and recovery projects.
“Open science is essential to accelerating disaster research and improving recovery outcomes,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s Associate Administrator for Science. “By making data and resources widely available, we can empower researchers around the world to contribute to this critical work.”
