No end in sight to ‘horror’ in Gaza, UN official tells Security Council
25 November 2024
UNITED NATIONS — A top UN official warned the Security Council on Friday that there is no end in sight to the “horror” in Gaza, where two million Palestinians are trapped in “a cycle of violence, poverty and despair.”
Robert Piper, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, said that the situation in Gaza has “reached a new level of desperation.”
“The humanitarian needs are dire and growing,” Piper said. “Two-thirds of the population are food insecure, and one in four children suffer from stunting.”
Piper said that the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been in place for more than a decade, has “strangled” the economy and made it impossible for people to rebuild their lives.
“The blockade has also had a devastating impact on the health system,” Piper said. “Hospitals are overcrowded, and essential medicines and supplies are often in short supply.”
Piper said that the UN is doing everything it can to help the people of Gaza, but that more needs to be done.
“We need the international community to take action to end the blockade and to provide the people of Gaza with the support they need,” Piper said.
The Security Council met on Friday to discuss the situation in Gaza. The meeting was requested by Kuwait, which holds the rotating presidency of the Council for November.
In a statement to the Council, Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah said that the situation in Gaza is “unacceptable.”
“The international community has a responsibility to protect the Palestinian people,” Sheikh Sabah said. “We cannot stand idly by while they continue to suffer.”
The Security Council has not yet taken any action on the situation in Gaza.
