Ottawa, October 30, 2024 – Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services, announced an agreement with the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) to deliver innovative health solutions to First Nations communities across Canada.
The agreement, valued at $25 million over five years, will support a range of initiatives, including:
- Telemedicine and virtual care programs
- Mobile health clinics
- Culturally-sensitive mental health and addictions services
- Traditional healing and knowledge exchange
“This agreement represents a significant step forward in our commitment to improving the health and well-being of First Nations people,” said Minister Hajdu. “By working together with the AFN, we can ensure that First Nations communities have access to the innovative health solutions they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.”
The agreement will also provide funding for Indigenous health research and capacity building, as well as support for Indigenous health professionals.
“This agreement is a testament to the importance of collaboration between First Nations and the Government of Canada,” said AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde. “By working together, we can make a real difference in the lives of First Nations people by providing them with access to high-quality health services.”
The agreement is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to invest $5 billion in First Nations health over the next decade. This investment is part of the government’s broader plan to improve the quality of life for First Nations people, and to close the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.
