Joint press statement by Federal Chancellor Scholz and President Pellegrini
Federal Chancellor Scholz: Mr. President, dear Peter,
Welcome to the Federal Chancellery! I am very pleased that you have come to Berlin today.
We have just had a very intensive and good exchange of views on the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Western Balkans, and bilateral relations between our two countries.
First of all, I would like to express my sincere condolences for the tragic incident that occurred in Bratislava yesterday. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.
Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law. It is a war against innocent civilians. We condemn this in the strongest possible terms. We demand that Russia immediately end its war of aggression and withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
We are also very concerned about the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. Millions of people have been displaced, and many are in need of food, water and medical care. We are providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and are working with our partners to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
The Russian war of aggression is also a turning point for Europe. It has shown us that we must invest more in our security and defense. We must also strengthen our cooperation with our partners in the EU and NATO.
In this context, I would like to thank Slovakia for its solidarity and support for Ukraine. Slovakia has taken in many refugees from Ukraine and is also providing military assistance. This is a strong expression of European solidarity.
We also discussed the situation in the Western Balkans. We agreed that the EU enlargement process is an important instrument for promoting stability and prosperity in the region. We also stressed the importance of supporting the reforms in the Western Balkan countries.
Germany and Slovakia are close and friendly partners. We cooperate closely in many areas, including economic, political and cultural affairs. I am very satisfied with the excellent state of our bilateral relations.
I am confident that our cooperation will continue to grow and develop in the years to come.
Thank you very much!
President Pellegrini: Thank you very much, Mr. Chancellor.

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine is a serious threat to European security. We must do everything we can to stop this war and prevent it from spreading to other countries.
Slovakia fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We are providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and are also working with our partners to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
The Russian war of aggression is also a turning point for Europe. It has shown us that we must invest more in our security and defense. We must also strengthen our cooperation with our partners in the EU and NATO.
In this context, I would like to thank Germany for its leadership in the EU and NATO. Germany is a reliable partner and we appreciate your commitment to the security of Europe.
