Supporting communities in tackling homelessness

October 29, 2024

The Government of Canada is committed to working with communities across the country to end homelessness. Today, the Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, Ahmed Hussen, announced funding for 60 new projects under the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS).

The HPS provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, Indigenous governing bodies, and municipalities to deliver a range of homelessness prevention and response programs. These programs include:

  • Outreach and engagement
  • Emergency shelter
  • Transitional housing
  • Supportive housing
  • Prevention programs
  • Research and evaluation

The projects announced today will receive a total of $200 million in funding. This funding will support a variety of projects, including:

  • A new outreach program for youth experiencing homelessness in Toronto
  • A new emergency shelter for women and children in Vancouver
  • A new transitional housing program for Indigenous people in Edmonton
  • A new supportive housing program for people with mental illness in Halifax
  • A new prevention program to help people at risk of homelessness in Montreal

“Homelessness is a complex issue, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution,” said Minister Hussen. “That’s why we are working with communities across the country to develop and implement solutions that meet their specific needs.”

The HPS is a key part of the Government of Canada’s National Housing Strategy. The National Housing Strategy is a 10-year, $70 billion plan to build new affordable housing and repair existing housing, as well as to provide support to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

“The National Housing Strategy is making a real difference in the lives of Canadians,” said Minister Hussen. “We are seeing a decrease in the number of people experiencing homelessness, and we are working to ensure that everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.”
