Reed – “Britain back on global stage to support nature’s recovery”

Environment Minister Rebecca Pow MP attended the second UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP15) in Montreal, Canada, today (Thursday 13 December) to set out the UK’s commitment to global nature restoration and climate action.

The Minister highlighted the importance of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and the need for ambitious targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. The GBF sets out a shared vision for living in harmony with nature by 2050, with clear goals and targets to achieve this aim.

The UK has already committed to protecting 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030. We are also investing £500 million in international climate finance to support nature restoration and climate adaptation in developing countries.

Environment Minister Rebecca Pow MP said:

“The UK is back on the global stage, leading the way in protecting and restoring nature. We are committed to working with our international partners to deliver the Global Biodiversity Framework and create a better future for our planet.

“We need to halt and reverse the loss of nature. This means protecting our forests, restoring our peatlands, and creating new habitats for wildlife. It also means reducing our emissions and transitioning to a more sustainable economy.

“The UK is leading the way on all of these fronts. We are investing in nature restoration, reducing our emissions, and supporting developing countries to take action on climate change.

“We are proud to be playing our part in protecting the planet for future generations.”

The UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP15) is taking place in Montreal, Canada, from 7 to 19 December 2022. It is the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The CBD is an international treaty that sets out the goals and targets for halting and reversing biodiversity loss. The GBF is a new framework that will guide the work of the CBD for the next decade.

The UK is committed to playing a leading role in implementing the GBF. We will work with our international partners to deliver the framework’s goals and targets, and create a better future for our planet.
