A total of £2.5 million will be given to 29 nature and community projects across the West Midlands, as part of the government’s Green Recovery Challenge Fund.
The fund is designed to support projects that will help to create new jobs, improve air and water quality, and increase access to green spaces.
The projects receiving funding include:
- A £500,000 project to create a new nature reserve in Birmingham
- A £250,000 project to improve air quality in the Black Country
- A £100,000 project to create a new community garden in Coventry
- A £50,000 project to plant trees in Wolverhampton
Environment Secretary George Eustice said: “These projects will make a real difference to the lives of people in the West Midlands.
“They will create new jobs, improve air and water quality, and increase access to green spaces.
“This is just one part of our £12 billion investment in nature over the next four years.”
West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: “I am delighted that the West Midlands has been awarded £2.5 million from the Green Recovery Challenge Fund.
“This funding will help us to create new jobs, improve air and water quality, and increase access to green spaces.
“These projects will make a real difference to the lives of people in the West Midlands.”
The Green Recovery Challenge Fund is part of the government’s £12 billion investment in nature over the next four years.
The fund is designed to support projects that will help to:
- Protect and restore the natural environment
- Create new jobs in the green economy
- Improve air and water quality
- Increase access to green spaces
Projects that are eligible for funding must:
- Be located in England
- Be completed by March 2025
- Have a total project cost of between £50,000 and £5 million
