Italian Government Delegation Attends G7 Conference on AI for Sustainable Development in Africa
San Francisco, November 15, 2024 – A delegation from Italy’s Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy (Mimit) traveled to San Francisco this week to participate in the G7 Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Sustainable Development in Africa.
The conference, hosted by the United States, brought together government representatives, industry leaders, and non-profit organizations to discuss the role of AI in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing Africa, including poverty, inequality, climate change, and health.
The Italian delegation was led by Mimit Undersecretary Anna Ascani, who emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach to harnessing the potential of AI for sustainable development.
“Italy is committed to working with our G7 partners to ensure that AI is used as a tool for good,” said Ascani. “By sharing our expertise and resources, we can help Africa leapfrog the challenges of the past and create a more prosperous and sustainable future.”
During the conference, the Italian delegation highlighted some of the country’s innovative projects in the field of AI for development. These included:
- A project to use AI to develop precision agriculture techniques that can help smallholder farmers in Africa increase their yields and reduce their environmental impact.
- A project to use AI to develop early warning systems for natural disasters, helping communities prepare for and mitigate the effects of extreme weather events.
- A project to use AI to improve access to health care in rural communities, providing remote consultations and diagnosis from qualified medical professionals.
The Italian delegation also participated in discussions on the ethical and responsible use of AI, emphasizing the need for transparent and accountable AI systems that respect human rights and privacy.
The G7 Conference on AI for Sustainable Development in Africa concluded with the adoption of a declaration outlining the group’s commitment to promoting the responsible development and use of AI for the benefit of the African people.
The Italian delegation welcomed the declaration and pledged to continue working with its G7 partners to implement its provisions.
“We are confident that AI can be a powerful force for good in Africa,” said Ascani. “By working together, we can harness its potential to improve lives, create opportunities, and build a more sustainable future for all.”
