Rights experts call for immediate end to post-election violence in Mozambique
15 November 2024
GENEVA (15 November 2024) – UN human rights experts* today called for an immediate end to the post-election violence in Mozambique, and urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible for human rights violations and abuses are held accountable.
“We are deeply concerned by the ongoing violence in Mozambique, which has resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and the displacement of thousands more,” the experts said. “We call on the authorities to take all necessary measures to end the violence and to protect the human rights of all Mozambicans.”
The experts noted that the violence has been particularly severe in the central and northern provinces of Mozambique, where there have been reports of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests and detentions, and torture.
“We are particularly concerned about the reports of sexual violence against women and girls,” the experts said. “We call on the authorities to investigate these reports and to provide support to the victims.”
The experts also expressed concern about the restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly that have been imposed in Mozambique since the elections.
“We call on the authorities to respect the right to freedom of expression and assembly, and to ensure that journalists and human rights defenders are able to carry out their work without fear of reprisal,” the experts said.
The experts urged the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the violence and to hold those responsible accountable.
“We also call on the authorities to provide reparations to the victims of violence and to take measures to prevent further violence from occurring,” the experts said.
