Distribution of Menstrual Cups and Underpants and Food Waste Focus of Government Activities to Celebrate European Week for Waste Prevention
Andorra la Vella (Andorra), November 14, 2024 – The Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Sustainability, through the Department of Environment and Sustainability, will carry out different awareness-raising activities during the European Week for Waste Prevention, which is celebrated from November 19 to 27.
This year, the focus will be on the promotion of reusable menstrual products and the fight against food waste. In this sense, on November 22, the distribution of 500 menstrual cups and 500 pairs of menstrual panties will begin through the pharmacies of the Principality.
The distribution will be carried out until stocks last and will be aimed at all women over 16 who request them. To obtain them, it will only be necessary to present the Andorran health card.
In addition, within the framework of this initiative, on November 23, a talk will be given at the Andorran Women’s Institute entitled “Menstruation without waste: reusable menstrual products”, which will be given by the gynecologist and specialist in menstrual health, Sílvia Guillem.
On the other hand, in order to raise awareness about food waste, a series of informative capsules will be disseminated through social networks, which will include advice on how to reduce food waste and how to take advantage of food scraps. In addition, on November 25, the campaign “Against food waste” will be launched, which will consist of the distribution of 1,000 reusable mesh bags in supermarkets in the country.
The Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Sustainability, Silvia Calvó, stressed that “the fight against waste is one of the main priorities of the Government, since it is a global problem with serious environmental, economic and social consequences.”
Calvó also recalled that “Andorra has committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, among which is Goal 12, which aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.”
The European Week for Waste Prevention is an initiative of the European Commission that aims to raise awareness about the importance of waste prevention and promote good practices in this area. This year’s campaign is focused on the theme “Circular Economies: Zero Waste for a Climate-Neutral Europe”.
