Government of Canada appoints new President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, today announced the appointment of Dr. Mona Nemer as the new President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
Dr. Nemer is a renowned scientist and leader in the field of health research. She is currently the Vice-President (Research) at the University of Ottawa, and she has held numerous leadership positions in the Canadian health research community, including Chair of the CIHR Governing Council from 2016 to 2019.
“Dr. Nemer is an exceptional leader with a deep understanding of the health research landscape in Canada,” said Minister Duclos. “Her expertise and passion for health research will be invaluable to CIHR as it continues to support world-leading research that improves the health of Canadians.”
Dr. Nemer’s research interests focus on the role of epigenetics in human disease. She has made significant contributions to our understanding of how environmental factors can influence gene expression and contribute to disease development.
“I am honoured to be appointed as the President of CIHR,” said Dr. Nemer. “CIHR plays a vital role in supporting health research in Canada, and I am committed to working with the CIHR team to ensure that Canada remains a global leader in health research.”
Dr. Nemer’s appointment is effective December 1, 2024. She will succeed Dr. Michael J. Strong, who has served as President of CIHR since 2019.
