Press Release: Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser is Patron of Reading Day and Reads in Berlin Kindergarten

Berlin, 14.11.2024 – On the occasion of the 17th Federal Reading Day on November 18, 2024, Federal Minister of the Interior and Community Nancy Faeser will take on the patronage of the national reading campaign. The aim of the day of action is to promote reading aloud and to inspire children and young people for literature. With her patronage, Faeser is sending a clear signal for the importance of reading and language skills.

As part of her patronage, Faeser will read to the children of the “Kinderinsel Berlin-Mitte” kindergarten on November 17, 2024. The reading session will take place at 10 a.m. in the kindergarten’s premises at Brunnenstraße 185-186 in Berlin-Mitte.

Faeser: “Reading aloud is a key to the world”

“Reading aloud is one of the most wonderful things you can do for a child. It opens up new worlds, stimulates the imagination and promotes language development. As Minister of the Interior, I am therefore particularly pleased to be the patron of Reading Day this year,” said Faeser.

“I would like to encourage all parents and grandparents to read aloud to their children and grandchildren regularly. It is a precious time that you will never forget,” continued Faeser.

Reading Day: A national campaign for reading

The Federal Reading Day is a national campaign for reading, which has been organized annually since 2008 by the non-profit association “Stiftung Lesen” (Reading Foundation). The aim of the day of action is to promote reading aloud and to inspire children and young people for literature.

Every year, numerous events take place throughout Germany on Reading Day, such as readings, author visits, and workshops. In 2023, over 1.5 million people took part in the campaign.

Stiftung Lesen: “Reading aloud is a gift for life”

“We are very pleased that Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser has agreed to take on the patronage of Reading Day this year. This is a clear signal of the importance of reading,” says Sabine Uehlein, Managing Director of the Reading Foundation.

“Reading aloud is a gift for life. It not only conveys knowledge, but also brings families and friends together. We hope that many people will be inspired by Reading Day to read aloud more often,” continues Uehlein.
