NASA Awards Contract for NOAA’s Space Weather Program

NASA has awarded a contract to Leidos Innovations, LLC, of Reston, Virginia, to support the development and operations of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Program. The Space Weather Operations, Research, and Mitigation Services, or SWORMS, contract has an estimated value of $93.6 million and a period of performance through 2033.
Under this contract, Leidos will provide a full suite of space weather support services to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). SWPC is the nation’s official source of space weather forecasts and warnings, and it is responsible for protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure from space weather events.
“We are excited to partner with Leidos to support NOAA’s critical space weather mission,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Space weather can have a significant impact on our planet, and this contract will help us better understand and mitigate the risks it poses.”
SWORMS will provide NOAA with a variety of services, including:
- Space weather forecasting: Leidos will develop and operate a suite of space weather models to provide forecasts of solar activity, geomagnetic storms, and other space weather events.
- Space weather research: Leidos will conduct research to improve our understanding of space weather and its impacts on Earth.
- Space weather mitigation: Leidos will develop and implement mitigation strategies to protect critical infrastructure from space weather events.
“This contract is a critical step forward in our efforts to protect the nation from space weather,” said Michael Freilich, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center. “Leidos has a proven track record of success in providing space weather services, and we are confident that they will be a valuable partner in our mission.”
The SWORMS contract is part of NASA’s Heliophysics Program, which is responsible for studying the Sun and its interactions with Earth and the solar system. The program is managed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
