British Columbia Small Craft Harbours, Budget 2024
Ottawa, ON – November 13, 2024 – The Government of Canada announced today a significant investment in small craft harbours in British Columbia through Budget 2024.
The investment of $30 million will support the continued operation, maintenance, and upgrades of essential small craft harbours across the province. These harbours provide critical access to water for commercial fishing, tourism, recreation, and other marine activities.
“Our government recognizes the vital role that small craft harbours play in coastal communities across British Columbia,” said the Honourable Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Vancouver South. “This investment will ensure that these harbours continue to serve the needs of local residents and support the province’s economy.”
The funding will be used to address a range of priorities, including:
- Repairing and upgrading existing infrastructure, such as docks, breakwaters, and ramps
- Improving accessibility and safety for users
- Supporting the development of new facilities and services
- Enhancing environmental protection and conservation measures
“Small craft harbours are essential to the social and economic fabric of our coastal communities,” said the Honourable Joyce Murray, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard. “This investment will help us to maintain and improve these vital assets, ensuring that they continue to support local businesses, livelihoods, and recreation.”
The investment in small craft harbours is part of the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to supporting coastal communities and protecting the environment.
“This investment is a welcome boost for our harbour,” said John Smith, Chair of the Smithers Harbour Authority. “It will allow us to make much-needed repairs and upgrades to our facilities, ensuring that we can continue to provide safe and reliable access to the water for our community.”
The funding for small craft harbours is part of the Government of Canada’s $350 million investment in fisheries and oceans announced in Budget 2024. This investment includes funding for scientific research, Indigenous reconciliation, and support for the commercial fishing industry.
