Minister Anandasangaree joins partners to announce next steps in Indigenous-led conservation in the Northwest Territories
November 13, 2024
Today, The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, The Honourable Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Northern Affairs, and The Honourable Shane Thompson, Member of Parliament for District 19, joined Indigenous leaders in the Northwest Territories to announce the next steps in supporting Indigenous-led conservation efforts in the region.
The Government of Canada is investing $2.5 million over three years in the Northwest Territories Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (NWT CIMP). This program will be led by Indigenous governments and organizations in the NWT and will provide Indigenous communities with the tools and resources they need to monitor and manage the cumulative effects of development on their lands and waters.
The NWT CIMP is a key part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and supporting their self-determination. The program will help Indigenous communities to:
- Monitor the cumulative effects of development on their lands and waters
- Identify and mitigate potential impacts of development on their communities
- Make informed decisions about land use and resource management
- Protect their traditional knowledge and cultural values
The NWT CIMP is a collaborative effort between the Government of Canada, the Government of the Northwest Territories, Indigenous governments and organizations, and industry partners. The program will be guided by an Indigenous-led Steering Committee, which will ensure that the program is responsive to the needs of Indigenous communities.
“The NWT CIMP is a significant step forward in supporting Indigenous-led conservation in the Northwest Territories,” said Minister Wilkinson. “This program will provide Indigenous communities with the tools and resources they need to monitor and manage the cumulative effects of development on their lands and waters.”
“The NWT CIMP is a testament to the Government of Canada’s commitment to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples,” said Minister Wawzonek. “This program will support Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories to protect their traditional knowledge, cultural values, and way of life.”
“The NWT CIMP is an important tool for Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories,” said MP Thompson. “This program will help Indigenous communities to make informed decisions about land use and resource management, and to protect their lands and waters for future generations.”
The NWT CIMP is part of the Government of Canada’s $1.3 billion commitment to Indigenous-led conservation. This investment will support Indigenous communities across Canada to conserve and protect their lands and waters.
