1,000 days of full-scale war on Ukraine: UNHCR urges solidarity with victims
Geneva, 12 November 2024 – On the 1,000th day since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is urging the international community to maintain its solidarity with the victims of the war.
“This grim milestone marks 1,000 days of immense suffering and displacement for the people of Ukraine,” said Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “We must not become numb to the ongoing horrors. The war is not just numbers, but individual lives and destinies that have been shattered.”
Since the start of the war, more than 14 million people have been forced to flee their homes in Ukraine, with over 8 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. An estimated 5.4 million people are internally displaced within Ukraine.
“The war in Ukraine has created one of the largest and fastest-growing displacement crises in the world,” said Grandi. “It is a humanitarian catastrophe that has uprooted millions of innocent people, leaving them with little but the clothes on their backs.”
UNHCR is calling for continued international support for the people of Ukraine, both those who have been displaced and those who remain in the country. This support includes providing shelter, food, water, healthcare, and psychosocial support.
“We must also not forget the millions of people who remain trapped in Ukraine, living in constant fear for their lives,” said Grandi. “They need our protection and assistance, and we must do everything we can to help them.”
UNHCR is also calling for an end to the war and a just and lasting peace.
“The people of Ukraine have suffered enough,” said Grandi. “They deserve to live in peace and dignity, in their own homes and communities.”
