SECO: Ordinance in relation to the situation in Moldova
Bern, 08.11.2024 – On 8 November 2024, the Federal Council adopted an ordinance to support measures to relieve the hardship of the rural population in the Republic of Moldova, which is particularly affected by the war in Ukraine. Switzerland is providing CHF 2 million for this purpose.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Switzerland has been providing support to the Republic of Moldova, particularly in the areas of humanitarian aid, reception of refugees, and combating human trafficking. The situation in Moldova is particularly challenging due to the large number of refugees from Ukraine (approx. 90,000) who have sought refuge in the country. The conflict in Ukraine has also had a negative impact on the Moldovan economy and led to rising prices.
The rural population of Moldova is particularly affected by the current situation. The income of farmers and small businesses has fallen significantly. In addition, many Moldovans are dependent on remittances from relatives working abroad, which have also decreased since the outbreak of the war.
The ordinance adopted today by the Federal Council provides for financial support of CHF 2 million for measures to relieve the hardship of the rural population in Moldova. The support will be implemented by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in close cooperation with local partners.
The support measures will focus on the following areas:
- Provision of food and other essential items to vulnerable families
- Support for farmers and small businesses to maintain their income
- Support for community initiatives that promote social cohesion and economic recovery
Switzerland is committed to supporting the Republic of Moldova in overcoming the challenges it faces as a result of the war in Ukraine. The support provided by Switzerland is part of its broader humanitarian and development cooperation with Moldova.
