Government of Canada supports made-in-Canada zero-emission vehicles
Ottawa, Ontario – November 8, 2024 – The Government of Canada is investing in the future of transportation by supporting the development and production of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in Canada. Today, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, announced a $1-billion investment in the Automotive Supplier Innovation Program (ASIP).
ASIP will provide funding to Canadian automotive suppliers to help them develop and produce innovative technologies that will support the production of ZEVs in Canada. The program will focus on supporting projects that:
- Develop new technologies that reduce the cost of ZEVs
- Improve the performance and efficiency of ZEVs
- Create jobs and economic opportunities in Canada
“Our government is committed to supporting the development of a clean, sustainable transportation system in Canada,” said Minister Champagne. “This investment will help Canadian automotive suppliers to develop the technologies that will make ZEVs more affordable and accessible for Canadians.”
The Government of Canada has set a target of having 100% of new passenger vehicles sold in Canada be ZEVs by 2035. This investment in ASIP will help Canada to achieve this target and become a leader in the global ZEV market.
“The automotive industry is undergoing a major transformation, and Canada is well-positioned to be a leader in the development and production of ZEVs,” said Flavio Volpe, President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA). “This investment will help Canadian automotive suppliers to seize the opportunities presented by this transformation and create jobs and economic opportunities in Canada.”
ASIP is part of the Government of Canada’s Innovation and Skills Plan, a multi-year plan to invest in the skills and innovation needed to drive Canada’s economy.
