November 8, 2024
OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, will travel to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18, 2024, to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29).
At COP29, Minister Guilbeault will engage with international partners to advance key priorities for Canada, including:
- Accelerating global climate action: Canada will work with other countries to strengthen and implement the Paris Agreement, the global framework for climate action. This includes setting ambitious targets for emissions reductions, increasing climate finance, and supporting vulnerable countries in their efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
- Protecting nature and biodiversity: Canada will advocate for the protection and restoration of nature and biodiversity as essential solutions to the climate crisis. This includes supporting the global goal of protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030.
- Promoting a just and equitable transition: Canada will work with partners to ensure that the transition to a low-carbon economy is fair and equitable, leaving no one behind. This includes supporting workers and communities affected by the transition, and promoting access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all.
Minister Guilbeault will also participate in a number of high-level events at COP29, including the World Leaders Summit and the Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Action. He will meet with his counterparts from around the world, as well as representatives from civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and the private sector.
“COP29 is a critical opportunity for the world to come together and take bold action on climate change,” said Minister Guilbeault. “Canada is committed to working with our partners to accelerate global climate action, protect nature and biodiversity, and promote a just and equitable transition to a low-carbon economy.”
Canada is a recognized leader in the global fight against climate change. The Government of Canada has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below 2005 levels by 2030, and to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Canada is also a major contributor to international climate finance, providing over $2.65 billion since 2015 to support climate action in developing countries.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18, 2024. COP29 is the 29th annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC is the international environmental treaty that sets out the global framework for cooperation on climate change.
