Skubal Named Tiger of the Year
November 8, 2024
DETROIT — Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal has been named the 2024 Tiger of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association.
Skubal, 26, had a breakout season in 2024, finishing with a 15-5 record, a 3.45 ERA, and 200 strikeouts in 180 innings pitched. He also threw two complete games and two shutouts.
Skubal’s performance was a key factor in the Tigers’ resurgence in 2024. After finishing with a 64-98 record in 2023, the Tigers improved to 85-77 this season and finished in second place in the American League Central Division.
Skubal received all 10 votes from the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association. He is the first Tigers pitcher to win the award since Justin Verlander in 2012.
“It’s a huge honor,” Skubal said. “I’m so grateful to my teammates, coaches, and the fans for their support. I’m just trying to do my part to help this team win.”
Skubal is the sixth Tigers player to win the Tiger of the Year award since its inception in 1959. The other winners are Al Kaline (1963), Denny McLain (1968), Willie Horton (1969), Cecil Fielder (1990), and Verlander (2012).
Skubal is expected to be a key part of the Tigers’ rotation for years to come. He is under contract through the 2026 season.
“Tarik is a special talent,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He’s a hard worker and he’s always looking to improve. I’m excited to see what he can accomplish in the future.”
