Government of Canada Invests $1.5 Million to Support First Nations and Indigenous Entrepreneurs in Northeastern Ontario

North Bay, Ontario – November 7, 2024 – The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses to create jobs, grow the economy, and build a more inclusive Canada. Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services, announced an investment of $1.5 million to support First Nations and Indigenous entrepreneurs across Northeastern Ontario.

The funding is part of the Indigenous Business Development Service (IBDS) program, which provides business planning and advisory services, skills training, loan guarantees, and other support to First Nations and Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses. The program is delivered through Indigenous organizations, such as the Northern Ontario Business Opportunities Corporation (NOBOC).

The $1.5 million investment will support NOBOC’s work in delivering the following programs and services to First Nations and Indigenous entrepreneurs in the region:

  • Business planning and advisory services
  • Skills training
  • Loan guarantees
  • Access to capital
  • Market development
  • Networking and mentoring opportunities

“Our government is committed to supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses to succeed,” said Minister Hajdu. “This investment will help NOBOC continue to provide the essential support that First Nations and Indigenous entrepreneurs need to grow their businesses and create jobs in their communities.”

“NOBOC is pleased to be able to continue to deliver the Indigenous Business Development Service program to First Nations and Indigenous entrepreneurs in Northeastern Ontario,” said NOBOC President and CEO Dave Maracle. “The program provides vital support to help entrepreneurs start, grow, and succeed in their businesses.”

The IBDS program is part of the Government of Canada’s broader commitment to supporting Indigenous economic development. The program has helped over 100,000 Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses across the country since its inception in 1996.
