Universal Periodic Review 47: UK Statement on The DPRK
Delivered by Ambassador Simon Smith, UK Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva
7th November 2024
Mister President,
The UK welcomes the DPRK delegation to the UPR.
We are concerned about the human rights situation in the DPRK. We call upon the DPRK to take immediate steps to improve the human rights of its people.
We are concerned about the lack of freedom of expression, association, and religion. We urge the DPRK to allow its people to freely express their views, to assemble peacefully, and to practice their religion without fear of persecution.
We are concerned about the use of arbitrary detention and torture. We urge the DPRK to release all political prisoners, to end the use of torture and other ill-treatment, and to ensure that all detainees are treated in accordance with international human rights standards.
We are concerned about the lack of access to food, water, and healthcare. We urge the DPRK to ensure that all its people have access to these basic necessities.
We are concerned about the DPRK’s nuclear and missile programs. We urge the DPRK to abandon its nuclear and missile programs and to engage in meaningful negotiations with the international community.
We welcome the DPRK’s engagement with the international community on human rights. We urge the DPRK to continue to cooperate with the UN and other international organisations to improve its human rights record.
We call upon the DPRK to implement the recommendations of the UPR. We stand ready to assist the DPRK in its efforts to improve its human rights record.
Thank you.
