Second Round of Moldova’s Presidential Elections – UK Statement to the OSCE, November 2024

UK Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Neil Bush, delivered the following statement to the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on 7 November 2024:

“Thank you, Mr. Chair,

I wish to deliver a statement on behalf of the United Kingdom on the second round of Moldova’s presidential elections, which was held on November 1, 2024.

Let me reiterate the United Kingdom’s continued support for Moldova’s democratic development and its sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

We welcome the high turnout in the second round, which exceeded that of the first round. This is a testament to the strong desire of the Moldovan people to have their voices heard and to shape the future of their country.

We also welcome the peaceful conduct of the election, which was facilitated by the efforts of all stakeholders, including the Central Election Commission. We have noted the concerns raised by some political parties and candidates regarding possible electoral irregularities, but it is important for all parties to respect the decision of the Central Election Commission and resolve any disputes through the proper legal channels.

We congratulate President-elect Maia Sandu on her victory. We look forward to working with her in the years to come to strengthen the UK-Moldova relationship and support Moldova’s reform agenda and further integration with the EU.

We also commend the outgoing President, Igor Dodon, for his service to Moldova. We value the constructive cooperation between the UK and Moldova during his presidency.

The United Kingdom stands ready to support Moldova as it navigates its path towards a more prosperous, democratic, and secure future.

Thank you, Mr. Chair.”
