Mpox is a rare viral infection that is caused by the monkeypox virus. It is spread through close contact with an infected person or animal, or through contact with contaminated objects. Symptoms of mpox can include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches and fatigue.
There is no specific treatment for mpox, but the infection usually resolves on its own within a few weeks. However, in some cases, mpox can be fatal.
PHE is advising people who have symptoms of mpox to contact their GP or sexual health clinic. PHE is also advising people who have had close contact with someone who has mpox to self-isolate for 21 days and to contact their GP or sexual health clinic if they develop any symptoms.
