Federal government supports projects for Veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness
November 5, 2024 – Ottawa, ON – Veterans Affairs Canada
The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, today announced funding for 15 projects across Canada that will help Veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
“Our Government is committed to ensuring that all Veterans have a safe and stable place to call home,” said Minister MacAulay. “These projects will provide vital support to Veterans who need it most, helping them to rebuild their lives and achieve their full potential.”
The projects are being funded through the Veterans Homelessness Program, which provides funding to organizations that provide housing, support services, and outreach to Veterans experiencing homelessness. The projects include:
- The Royal Canadian Legion’s Operation: Leave No Veteran Behind will provide transitional housing and support services to Veterans in need across Canada.
- The Salvation Army’s Veteran Respite Centre in Toronto will provide a safe and welcoming space for Veterans to access food, showers, laundry services, and peer support.
- The Vancouver Island Health Authority’s Veterans Wellness Court will provide specialized support to Veterans involved in the justice system who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
- The Canadian Mental Health Association’s Operation: Hero at Home will provide housing and support services to Veterans with mental health challenges who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The Veterans Homelessness Program is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to ending homelessness among Veterans. The program was launched in 2018 and has already helped over 1,000 Veterans find a safe and stable place to live.
“I am grateful for the dedication of the organizations that are working to support Veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” said Minister MacAulay. “These projects will make a real difference in the lives of our Veterans and their families.”
