Defense Department Tests AI Software, Advances to Improve Physical Security Posture
October 28, 2024
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is piloting an artificial intelligence (AI) software platform designed to enhance physical security posture across its installations.
The software, known as the Physical Security Information System (PSIS), utilizes machine learning algorithms to analyze data from existing physical security systems, such as sensors, cameras, and access control points. By analyzing this data, PSIS can identify potential vulnerabilities and provide automated recommendations to address them.
“PSIS is a game-changer for our physical security operations,” said Jim Breckenridge, Director of Force Protection at the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security. “It gives us the ability to proactively identify and mitigate security risks before they become incidents.”
The DoD has been piloting PSIS at several installations since 2022. During this pilot phase, the software has detected and addressed multiple potential security breaches, including unauthorized entry attempts, suspicious activity, and equipment malfunctions.
“In one instance, PSIS detected an unusual pattern of activity around a sensitive area on an installation,” said Major Sarah Jones, a physical security officer involved in the pilot program. “The software alerted us to the potential threat, and we were able to intercept the suspects before they could gain access to the facility.”
PSIS is part of the DoD’s broader effort to modernize its physical security infrastructure. By incorporating AI and other advanced technologies, the DoD aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of its security operations.
“We’re constantly looking for innovative ways to improve our security posture,” said Breckenridge. “PSIS is a significant step forward in that effort.”
The DoD plans to expand the pilot program to additional installations over the next year. If successful, the software could be deployed across the department’s entire enterprise, comprising over 5,000 installations worldwide.
“Our goal is to make our installations as secure as possible,” said Breckenridge. “PSIS will play a major role in helping us achieve that objective.”
In addition to PSIS, the DoD is pursuing other AI-driven initiatives to enhance its physical security posture. These initiatives include the development of autonomous sensors, the use of predictive analytics to identify potential threats, and the integration of AI into command and control systems.
“The DoD is committed to leveraging AI and other emerging technologies to ensure the safety and security of its personnel, facilities, and critical assets,” said Breckenridge. “PSIS is a testament to that commitment.”
