UNITED NATIONS, Oct 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed shock and outrage at the death toll and destruction caused by Israeli airstrikes in north Gaza.
The strikes, which began on Tuesday, killed at least 15 people and injured dozens more. They also destroyed several buildings, including a school and a mosque.
“I am deeply shocked and outraged by the killing of at least 15 Palestinians, including a young girl, in airstrikes in the north of the Gaza Strip,” Guterres said in a statement.
“This incident is a reminder of the heavy toll that the conflict continues to take on civilians, and the urgent need to end the violence and find a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he added.
The airstrikes were in response to a series of rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel. The Israeli military said it targeted Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza.
Hamas claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, saying they were in retaliation for the killing of a Palestinian teenager in clashes with Israeli forces.
The violence has raised fears of a wider conflict between Israel and Hamas. The two sides fought a war in 2014 that killed more than 2,000 Palestinians and 73 Israelis.
Guterres called on both sides to cease fire and resume negotiations.
“I urge all parties to halt violence and work towards a two-state solution that will end the occupation and realize the legitimate aspirations of both Palestinians and Israelis,” he said.
The United States, which is Israel’s main ally, has also called for an end to the violence.
“We call on all sides to de-escalate, end violence, and work to restore calm,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.
The European Union also urged an end to the violence.
“The European Union strongly condemns the ongoing violence in Gaza and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement.
The airstrikes have been widely condemned by human rights groups.
“These airstrikes are a clear violation of international law and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” said Amnesty International.
“The Israeli authorities must immediately halt these attacks and respect the right to life of all Palestinians,” the group added.
