KHARTOUM, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) — The United Nations (UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Khardiata Lo NDiaye, on Wednesday decried the recent attacks against civilians in Al Jazirah state, central Sudan.
“I am deeply concerned about the recent attacks in Al Jazirah State, perpetrated on civilians,” said Lo NDiaye in a statement on Wednesday.
Local media reported that on Tuesday, five people from the same family were killed in an attack by an armed group on the village of Um Boneina in Al Jazirah state.
Hundreds of residents of Um Boneina village fled their homes towards the state capital, seeking refuge in schools and government buildings, according to local media.
“These attacks have caused displacement, destruction of property, and loss of lives. I condemn these acts of violence against civilians in the strongest possible terms,” Lo NDiaye said.
She urged the government to investigate the attacks and hold the perpetrators accountable. She also called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and human rights principles, and to refrain from targeting civilians.
“The UN stands in solidarity with the people of Al Jazirah State and is committed to providing life-saving assistance to those affected by this violence,” she said.
Al Jazirah state has witnessed repeated tribal clashes in recent months. In July, at least 31 people were killed and dozens injured in clashes between two Arab tribes in Al Jazirah, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
