Government of Canada Announces Funding Opportunity to Address Climate-Sensitive Infectious Diseases

Ottawa, October 25, 2024 – The Government of Canada has launched a call for proposals for projects that aim to build capacity and raise awareness on climate-sensitive infectious diseases. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to protecting public health and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Climate change is a major threat to human health, and it is known to have significant impacts on the transmission and spread of infectious diseases. As the climate continues to change, new and emerging infectious diseases are likely to arise, and the incidence and severity of existing diseases may increase.

The Government of Canada recognizes the urgent need to address the threat of climate-sensitive infectious diseases. Through this funding opportunity, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) will provide financial support to projects that aim to:

  • Enhance surveillance and monitoring of climate-sensitive infectious diseases
  • Strengthen laboratory capacity for diagnosis and characterization of these diseases
  • Develop and implement strategies to prevent and control outbreaks
  • Raise awareness and educate the public and healthcare professionals about climate-sensitive infectious diseases

“Our government is committed to protecting Canadians from public health threats, including those posed by climate change,” said the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health. “This funding opportunity will support innovative projects that will help us build capacity and raise awareness on climate-sensitive infectious diseases, ensuring that we are better prepared to prevent and respond to these threats.”

Eligible applicants include universities, research institutions, non-profit organizations, provincial and territorial governments, and Indigenous organizations. Projects must be completed within a maximum of three years.

The deadline for submitting proposals is November 28, 2024.
