In this context, the contribution of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, emphasized by the Director General, Marcello Minenna, is also crucial, given its task of monitoring the production and distribution of goods on the national territory.
The Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, underlined the impact of counterfeiting on the national economy, emphasizing the importance of protecting intellectual property and the Made in Italy brand. The Head of the Economic Development Unit of the Prime Minister’s Office, Antonio D’Acunto, outlined the activities carried out by the Government in support of businesses, including the recent approval of the national anti-counterfeiting plan.
The interventions of the representatives of consumer associations, such as the National Consumer Union (UNC), highlighted the need to raise consumer awareness to make them aware of the risks associated with purchasing counterfeit products. The importance of international cooperation in combating counterfeiting was also emphasized, thanks to the agreements in place with foreign customs administrations and the work carried out within the World Customs Organization (WCO).
During the webinar, the General Manager of the Guardia di Finanza, Giuseppe Zafarana, illustrated the operational activities carried out by the Corps in the fight against counterfeiting, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with the other Forces of Order and the Judiciary. The Head of the Intellectual Property Observatory of the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, Monza Brianza and Lodi, Alberto Dal Poz, presented the results of the research study on the damage caused by counterfeiting to the Italian economy, quantifying it at around 10 billion euros per year.
During the webinar, the representatives of the main e-commerce platforms operating in Italy, such as Amazon, eBay, and Zalando, expressed their commitment to supporting initiatives to combat online counterfeiting and to collaborating with the authorities to make the internet a safer place for consumers and businesses.
In her concluding remarks, Senator Laura Garavini, President of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Industry, Commerce, Tourism, Agriculture and Agricultural Production, welcomed the proposals emerged during the webinar and expressed her commitment to working with the Government to implement effective measures to combat counterfeiting and protect the national economy.
