Change of Command Ceremony in Central Ontario District
Barrie, Ontario – August 16, 2023 – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) today held a Change of Command Ceremony in Barrie, Ontario, to mark the official transfer of command of the Central Ontario District.
Outgoing District Commander, Chief Superintendent John Long, handed over command to incoming District Commander, Chief Superintendent Dave West. The ceremony was presided over by Assistant Commissioner Brenda Butterworth-Carr, Commanding Officer of the Ontario Regional Division.
During his tenure as District Commander, Chief Superintendent Long oversaw significant policing initiatives in the Central Ontario District, including the launch of the Barrie Street Crime Unit and the creation of the Simcoe County Crime Prevention Council. He also played a key role in the development of the Barrie Police Service’s new Community Safety and Well-being Plan.
Chief Superintendent West comes to the Central Ontario District from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), where he served as the Commander of the Central Region. He has extensive experience in law enforcement, having held various leadership positions within the OPP.
In his address to the assembled guests, Chief Superintendent West said, “I am honored to be appointed as the District Commander of the Central Ontario District. I look forward to working with the dedicated members of the RCMP in this district to ensure the safety and security of our communities.”
The Change of Command Ceremony is a long-standing tradition within the RCMP. It symbolizes the transfer of responsibility for the leadership and management of a police district. The ceremony is also an opportunity for the outgoing and incoming District Commanders to express their gratitude and appreciation for the support of their colleagues and the community.
