- GENEVA (Reuters) – Sudan stands at a “dangerous tipping point” after a spike in rights abuses, including civilian deaths, arbitrary arrests and torture, a UN investigator said on Saturday, urging action to avert further bloodshed.
Adama Dieng, a UN expert on human rights in Sudan, said he was “deeply concerned” by recent developments in the country, where security forces have been accused of human rights violations during protests against the October 25 military coup.
“The situation in Sudan has reached a dangerous tipping point, with a sharp increase in human rights violations and abuses,” Dieng said in a statement.
“These include unlawful killings, arbitrary arrests and detentions, torture and other ill-treatment, and a crackdown on freedom of expression and assembly.”
Dieng said he had received reports of at least 96 people being killed and hundreds injured since the coup, and that security forces had used excessive force to disperse protests.
He also expressed concern about the arrest and detention of hundreds of people, including political leaders, activists, journalists and human rights defenders.
“I urge the authorities to immediately cease the use of excessive force against protesters, to release all those arbitrarily detained, and to uphold the right to freedom of expression and assembly,” Dieng said.
He also called on the international community to support the Sudanese people in their quest for democracy and human rights.
The UN Human Rights Council is due to hold a special session on Sudan on March 10 to discuss the situation in the country.
Sudan has been in turmoil since the military seized power in October, ousting Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and derailing a transition to civilian rule.
The coup has sparked widespread protests, which have been met with a violent crackdown by security forces.
